Supplements! Do You Need Them?

March 16, 2009

Did you know that if you are eating a healthy diet you probably don't need supplements? Food is always the best source for all the nutrients your body needs. I just learned that if you become a member of Spark People, there is a nutrition tracker that keeps track of the nutrition your body is getting from the foods that you eat each day. Here is the page www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/nutrition.asp. You might not be able to view this page until you sign up though.

Once you are a member, SparkPeople has a page where you can add the food you consume daily. At the end of the day, Sparkpeople gives you suggestions as how to eat better. It also has a menu plan for the week's which include snacks and light desserts. You can even print out a grocery list of the menu's they suggest for each day of the week.

Remember it is better to eat and exercise your way to a healthy body than to depend on supplements. Click on this link to get the whole sccop on supplements. www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp Check this out before you pay for more supplements.

Have a Great Day!!

Is Detoxing Good For You?

March 7, 2009

I have heard and seen a lot about detox diets lately and have wondered if you need to detox your body.  One of my favorite websites, Spark People, had an excellent article written by a dietitian called "Detox Diets:  Helpful or Full of Hype?"

One of Spark People's members was on a 21 day detoxing diet and was looking for encouragement.  She was only eating fruits and vegetables and drinking tea during this 21 day diet.  Author, Becky Hand, explains that our bodies have their own natural detoxifying mechanisms and does a terrific job of explaining them further.  Then she goes on to explain what happens when you detox and colon cleanse.  She says the only time you need to cleanse your colon is before surgery.

Any "diet" that recommends eliminating certain food groups entirely is risky and nutritionally unbalanced.  Just try to eat healthy enjoying food from all the food groups and don't forget to exercise.  To read the whole article go to www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp
